Buying Your Hamster
| Always buy a young hamster where possible, between the ages of four to ten weeks. An older hamster would still make a good pet, especially one which has been petted from a youngster, for these tend to be less nervous of strangers, although you may not have it for as long as you would have hoped. In choosing a hamster, look for one with bright, bold eyes, well groomed coat and lively behaviour. Be wary of animals that are thin, listless and sitting by themselves in a corner. An obvious backbone and a swollen stomach are signs of improper feeding. The healthiest of the bunch are the ones that are on their feet quickly with perky ears when disturbed. |
