Illnesses
| With hamsters, there are many different illnesses. They very rarely occur, but just in case I have compelled a list of what are the signs that your hamsters are ill. 1)If there is a lump in your hamsters stomach then this is likely to be a tumour, contact the vet immediately. 2)Runny eyes. 3)Droopy ears. 4)Listless behaviour. 5)Loss of appetite. 6)Bedraggled coat. If your hamster has any of these symptoms, then the first course of action is to separate them if you have several, move your hamster to a different room. Tend to the healthy first; it is not a good idea to move from the sick to the healthy. If you tend to the sick first, or even if you dont, wash your hands thoroughly with a lot of soap and water. Keep your hamster warm and comfortable and do not disturb it if you dont need to. If you find him/her stirring, then you can tempt him/her with some food. Use all the above precautions first. Then, if your hamster has Number 5, I know a good way to deal with it. I have had this too, with one of my hamsters. There could be trouble with eating the hard food, so give your hamster soft food, for example, fruit, and cheese, even yoghurt. If this doesnt work and the hamster still does not eat, call the vet. Wet Tail is the most serious disease among hamsters. It is a form of diarrhoea. The tail and vent area become wet with a watery fluid and droppings, and there is usually a smell. The hamster refuses to eat and becomes thin. Recovery is rare, but you could try the paragraph above. All sawdust and bedding that has been in contact with the infected animal must be permanently disposed of. |
