1. How can you tell a male from a female hamster?

Answer by krissymilam
The males have a mor rounded bottem than the females, Just google it for a pic.

Answer by Nuttie
Its quite simple. Girlies are alot smaller around that area. Boys tend to have large obvious testicles.

3. The mom had babies! What should I do?

Answer by Teenoke
First off, you could benefit from the breeding section of the website. There is really great advise from experienced hamster owners.

Here are some facts you could take into consideration:

- Do not touch the babies, the mother will smell the scent and may eat them, plus it confuses the mother, she may think they are not her babies, in which case, she will not care for them.
- The Syrian hamster mother must be left alone with the babies, there should be no other adult hamster in the cage. As for dwarves, the father will help raise them.
- Litter size for syrians are 1-18 but the average is 8. Dwarves have have 1-14 but the average is 4.
- Keep the cage in a safe, quiet room where there is not much disruption.

4. What type of cage is the best Ex) aquarium vs. wire cage vs. plastic & wire.

Answer by monkeychow
Ehhh...it sort of depends on your personal preference. Aquariums are easier, you can clean them pretty fast and there isn't much chance of your hamsters gettin out. Also, it has a great view! But the space is limited and you have to provide toys, whereas with a plastic cage (ie a CT2 or CT3) there are plenty of add-ons (like tubes) that make it more fun fo rthe hamster. but I've heard a lot more about hamsters escaping from plastic cages. And wire cages...I honestly don't know. I would think that they wouldn't be that good because the hamster would probably chew ont he bars.

5. What types of shavings/bedding can I use for my hamster?

Answer by Teenoke
The safest bedding for any hamster is aspen or carefresh. Never use cedar, pine, or corn cob bedding. Cedar and pine shavings have volatile compounds that are harmful to a hamsters respitory tract. Plus, some of those wood chips have sharp jaggedy edges that can cut a hamster. Hamsters only have 10% blood in their body, so any cut can become dangerous to a hamster. Corn cob bedding is not so dangerous, but it can impact your hamsters gut, and fungus problems can occur more easily than other types of bedding.

6. How do I tame my hamster?

Answer by Teenoke
Let your hamster have the first few days in a cage on his/her own to get used to it. Put him in a quiet place so he is not disturbed and give him plenty of bedding. Putting a small cardboard box in the cage will also give him somewhere to hide, and therefore a sense of security. The first few times you get him out, do not go through the cage door, especially if it is at the top. Take the whole top off the cage and place the base on the floor. Then sit on the floor and scoop up your hamster. If he is young, he will probably be very skittish so you will have to be very aware to stop him running away, but let him run on your body. It is best if this job is initially done by an adult or older child, as small children do not have the confidence, usually. Always scoop up your hamster firmly - it will make him more confident, and never hold him without first sitting on the floor unless he is *really* tame. Pick up your hamster in this way once or twice a day, talking in a soft voice and using lots of gentle encouragement. Skittish young hamsters usually calm down with age. Always wait until your hamster is awake before taming him, and *never* pick up a sleeping hamster. Most biting is as a result of fear, not viciousness. Remember this if you do get bitten (it was probably your fault) it does not mean the hamster is nasty. The most common reasons for getting bitten are grabbing a hamster from above, picking up a sleeping hamster and accidentally pinching a hamster when you pick him up. After a biting incident, put the hamster back in the cage and leave him for a couple of hours to calm down. Remember that taming is easier if a hamster has been handled since birth, but I have yet to meet an untamable hamster. It may take months if the pet shop has allowed an animal to mature without once being handled, but even an older animal can be tamed with effort. If at any stage the hamster starts biting and looking anxious, try going back a step and repeating the process (ie leave him alone for a few days). Wash your hands before handling, because another reason for a biting incident is caused by the scent of food from your hands.

7. What's the difference between a Syrian and a Dwarf?

Answer by Munchy
Syrian hamsters are bigger and slower than the dwarf hamster. Syrians can't live together but dwarfs live in pairs or groups.

add an answer

8. What type of hamster should I get?

Answer by Munchy
If you want one hamster buy a syrian if you want more than one buy a dwarf. Dwarfs dont always live together, if dwarfs fight and you see blood seperate them. Syrians can not live in pairs or groups.

9. Can Syrian Hamsters live together?

Answer by Hamster Addict
No definately not, syrians are solitary. That means that they like to live on their own. Syrians that live together will result in fighting which will lead to them both being injured or even killed.

Answer by hamster_puppy
The only reason you see them in the Petstore or Breeder together is because they aree still young when they are older they will fight, even to death.

10. What behavior should I expect from my new hamster?

Answer by Drusilla
Well at first, he/she is going to be nervious around you and everything, so just leave him/her fora couple of days to settle in the new environment, and try to keep the room they are in as quiet as possible. Remember take time!

11. My hamsters are fighting - should I seperate them?

Answer by Hamster Addict
If they're syrian hamsters then yes. Since Syrians are solitary. If dwarves then it depends on how bad the fighting is sometimes it's just play fighting. If you see blood then they must be seperated.

12. How can I tell if my hamster has wet tail? or What are wet tail symptoms

Answer by Teenoke
Wet tail or the scientific word being proliferative ileitis or transmissible ileal hyperplasia is a highly infectious illness of the digestive tract where the lower part of the intestine becomes thickened and inflamed. The leading cause is stress. Especially if the hamster is taken away from its mother to early, or stress can also be caused by being in a new enviroment ect.. The first symptoms are usually unkempt fur, loss of appetite and lethargy, quickly followed by severe watery diarrhoea, and a hunched position. Rectal prolapse may occur and wasting and death is likely within two to six days. Treatment is possible but difficult and requires dedicated nursing. If wet tail is suspected, a vet needs to be consulted immediately, the hamster must be isolated and strict hygiene observed. An infected hamster needs immediate veterinary treatment and then must be kept warm and clean with bedding changed frequently and as free from stress as possible. As fluids are lost with the diarrhoea they need to be replaced and no solid food given for at least the first 24 hours.

19. Which is a better pet a Hamster or a Gerbil?

Answer by DRUSILLA
Well it all depends on who its for? Hamsters are not as jumpy and overall easier to look after and can be kept seperatly (If syrian). But gerbils live longer and can be kept in colony's.

20. My hampster recently got his leg hurt. He is favoring his right rear leg, and sleeping alot. Any advise on how to help him? Vets around here do not seem to be able to help a hampster. Please please advise :(.

Answer by Munchy
First of all its hamster not hampster and it depends what he has done to his leg. If it's broken take the wheel out but if its a cut then it will usually heal itself but if there is a problem you dont know what it must see a vet no matter how unhelpful they are being.

23. I am buying a black bare hamster will he be able to live with a golden or panda hamster?

Answer by monkeychow
OK...first of all, Black Bear, Golden, and Panda are all incorrect names for Syrian hamsters. Thus, they can't live together. Syrians are solitary creatures and once they pass a certain stage they will start to fight each other. Eventually one is going to kill the other.

24. are syrain and golden or panda hamsters the same thing or no.Because my golden and my sisters panda hamster like playing in there play area together and sleep together but some times fight.

Answer by monkeychow
Golden and Panda hamsters are types of syrian hamsters. Again, the name "Panda" is incorrect. Anyhow, since they're both syrians they CANNOT live together. The only reason thye haven't fought seriously is probably because they are still young or you have a big cage. Seperate them immediately.

Answer by hamster_puppy
Petstores aren't the greatest place to give them away to. Try and place ads in newspapers, print out papers and staple (or tape) them to various things in your neighbourhoor. If there are one or two pups left, then buy a cage. If a cage sounds too expensive then try the Tub idea.
MATERIALS:
Tub (a tub is a container used to store things they are large, plastic and deep enough for hamsters)
Wood Shavings
Water bottle
SOLID wheel
Food
Food bowl
Toys
Bedding
And anything else you wish to place inside the cage!
Once you find a Tub, they are cheap you can find them at Wal-Mart, place the woodshavings, bedding and eveything else! As for the water bottle you have to drill a hole in the Tub. They can't be too big or small. If your hamster constantly pushes out the bottle lean the side with the bottle against a wall or use a new tub and create a very small hole. This Tub is east to clean and costs under $20 - $25.
Good Luck!

29. I just got a panda bear hamster will he fight with my female golden hamster. And when thy are about 4 to 6 weeks old how can you tell them a part because so far I think I have all males and one female out of 7

Answer by monkeychow
IN this stage, they won't fight, but since they are of opposite genders, putting them together would mean risking pregnancy, so I wouldn't. Also, when they get past the 6 week stage they NEED to be seperated.

Answer by Lady_of_the_Horses
A Panda bear hamster and a Golden hamster are exactly the same type of hamster..Syrian. They will fight, or if you have a male and female you might have a population explosion of hamsters.

30. I just got a black bare hamster and he gets along with my moms male teddy bare hamster can they share a cage?Or could he share a cage with my golden hamster ( she is bigger than him )??

No. They are both syrians and they will eventually fight each other to the death. Also, putting him in with your female golden hamster would give a risk of getting pregnant as well...anyways, syrians are never to be put together.

Answer by monkeychow
IN general, people seem to say that dwarf hamsters are more agressive. Me, I've never had syrians before, so I don't really think so. I've only been bitten a few times while taming them, so I think that it depends more on the individual personality of the hamster.

You feed your hamster by using a pet bowl, water should be given in a waterbottle. Just take out the bowl, put food in and leave in the cage. You can use hamster mixes to feed your hamster but fruit/veg can be given-make sure you find out which are safe first though.

36. My Hammy Has Escaped!!! How Do I Catch Her?!!!? PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

Answer by hamster_puppy
Put treats in every room, close the door a put a blanket or towel on the large gap under the door. Check in a half and hour or less. Once you find which room your hamster is in place the cage in the room a hamster eventually returns home! If not search around walls or under sofas or other pieces of furniture. Hamsters stay near walls because a predator can easily catch them in the open (in the wild of course). If you have any pets place them somewhere were they cannot harm the hamster.
Another idea set up a trap not a live one for unwanted mice this kind:
Materials:
Bucket
Towel
Food
A ramp or ladder

Place the towel in the bucket then place the food inside, place the ramp so the hamster an climb into the bucket but not come out Voila!

39. Can hamsters swim?

Answer by hamster_puppy
NO!!! Hamsters CAN NOT swim!!!!! Everyone thinks they can swim because the can supposedly puff their cheeks up. And that is NOT true. Even if they could swim natural oils in their fur would be washed away and the hamster will eventually die. Please do not bathe your hamster!

Answer by Kirby
What hamster_puppy has said is actually incorrect. A hamster CAN swim quite easily. It's not advised to have your hamster swim, but if a hamster has to go through water to get somewhere they can swim.

40. If I can't bathe my hamster, then how will it stay clean? (I know they wash themselves, but that can't be enough)

Answer by Lady_of_the_Horses
Actually that is good enough for a hamster, their bodies can bend in all different ways in order to stay clean. Next time you handle your hamster notice how soft and clean their fur is. And you didn't have to wash the hamster at all :)

41. My hamster bites. How can I get him to stop?

Answer by Munchy
You can get your hamster used to you by getting a cup and putting it by the cage door so the hamster will go in it. Then put your hand near the entrance to the cup and let the hamster sniff your hand. When it gets used to you it will walk onto your hand. When getting it out don't just shove your hand in or it may frighten your ham and then it will bite to protect itself.

42. About how much sleep is good for a hamster?

Answer by Lady_of_the_Horses
Well, hamsters will sleep during the day but, I think it depends on what the hamster was doing like say all night it was running on its wheel or creating the perfect bed, then that means it might sleep longer during the day. Now usually a hamster sleeps for 14 hours but like I said it depends on the things the hamster was doing at night.

57. Why Does my new hamster run away?

Answer by krissymilam
That what they do unless you are holding em.

Answer by Stockingsette
Your hamster will need time to adjust to his new surroundings and get used to you. Try giving him a little time to settle in to his new home. Afterward, you could try taming him.

78. My dwarf hamster got out of his ball when i was not watching and possibly fell of my ledge to the first story of my house or was taken by my cat down the stairs, i found him no less than 3mins later and got him away from my cat. I am worried about my hamster beause he is sleeping in his wheel and is just not acting the way he used to and i checked his legs out to see if they were hurt but i dont think he has any injurys. Is this something to take him to the vet over or is he just scared since he was near the cat?
