Tribute To My Dad

Finally, the real Dixie!!

Leaving the pet store...

On February 10, 2002, I was doing what I usually do during the day - trying to get my hammie sleep. A really nice young man and an equally nice young woman came over by the cage I was in. I couldn't see what they look like too well, since we tend to be nearsighted, but they smelled very good.

The two nice people wanted to take me home with them. I was put into a box and handed to them. They brought me into a truck and we went for a long ride home. This was my first time out of the pet store since I had gotten there! I was so excited, but everything smelled so new. I got a little scared and missed all my friends back at the pet store.

After the long ride in the truck, the young man, named Jim, took me back to his home and placed me in a bigger tank and gave me some food and water. He put a little wooden house for me to hide in inside the cage. Then he put the cage on top of a house where two very polite and funny guinea pigs lived, Mrs. Merc and Miss Moo. Next to me was a bunny named Devlyn. She was very nice too. Sometimes, Jim's little beagle, Samantha, would come in and try to get a look at me but then Jim would tell her to get down.

I was at Jim's house for a few days. I thought that was going to be my new home, but he said that I was only staying there for a few days until he gave me to someone. I didn't know what he was talking about, so I went about doing my usual hamster things.

A few days later, on February 14, I was put back in the truck and Jim buckled my cage in. He took me for a ride across the city. We stopped eventually and he took me out of his truck. There was something hanging over the cage, so I couldn't see out of it. I was kind of scared again, I didn't know what was going on... I hid inside my little house where it was safe.

Jim went inside another house and there was this girl there. He held my cage out to her and lifted the thing hanging over it. The girl's face came to the side of the tank - I was curious, so I stuck my little hammie head out of one of the holes to my house. She laughed and cooed a bit, saying I was so cute. They hugged and kissed. The girl then brought me upstairs to her room and put my cage on her bureau.

I got used to the new smells and the new people around me. Things got less confusing as the days went by and I found out just who all these people are. Jim is my dad and he got me for my mom, Candi, as a Valentines' Day surprise. The nice young woman is my aunt Mel. This is my new family. They don't look like hamsters and they sure don't smell like them. The only fur I've noticed on them so far is on their heads and some on their arms and legs. Their noses don't move and they walk on two legs - but they love me anyway and I love them!

For My Dad, Jim

You traveled a ways
To carry me home
I had no family
You gave me your own

With lots of love
You took care of me
I love you right back
'Cause you're my daddy...

Dad, I love you very hammie much. And Mom(she helped me do this). And I love Auntie Melbie too.
